Our Services
“We want to serve the men, women, and children that are affected by incarceration and the barriers during reentry to the community.”- Jeffrey and Shakira Johnson The Johnson-Shaw Foundation
“Empowering socioeconomically disadvantaged people transform their lives and positively impact their communities”
Connecting Children With Resources
The children of the incarcerated are very much looked over. They are a special demographic in our community.
- Provide seasonal needs
- Provide supplemental attention in the community
- Provide social outreach
Employment
Finding employment is necessary for reentrants. This can be a significant barrier for many returning to the community from incarceration.
- Help guide to resources for trades training and continuing education
- Help guide to employers that hire people with criminal records
- Provide work clothes, scrubs, shoes, and boots
- provide necessary tools
Housing
Another immense barrier for reentrants is securing safe, supportive, and affordable housing. Some may be fortunate enough to have family or friends to live with but most landlords do a criminal background check to screen applicants. Stable and safe housing is crucial to prevent recidivism and homelessness.
- Help find landlords that are willing to be involved in having a reentering individual housed in their property
- Help to get furnishings and household goods
Transportation and Identification
One of the initial impasses a citizen that is reentering the community from incarceration will face is access to transportation and having proper identification. These are imperative for citizens in the community to maintain employment, continuity of healthcare, social service benefits, transportation, and establishing independence.
- Provide the resources to get PA state IDs, driver’s licenses, and birth certificates
- Provide 1 month bus fare or gas card
- Provide information about public transportation that is available in the area
Helping Socioeconomically Disadvantaged People
At The Johnson-Shaw Foundation, we want to serve the men, women, and children who are affected by incarceration and the barriers during reentry to the community
The barriers that The Johnson-Shaw Foundation would like to resolve include, but are not limited to:
- Connect people to Union Apprenticeship Programs
- Provide seasonal needs and supplemental attention to children of those incarcerated
- Access to transportation and proper identification
- Find safe, supportive, and affordable housing
